We are looking for an equity-focused systems leader and people savant who oversees the Finance, Human Resources, and Operations Services departments at Commit. As the next Managing Director of Operations, you will report to the President and be an integral part of a distributed leadership model. This is a great opportunity for an experienced individual with a track record of creative problem solving and change management in a mission-driven organization.

Commit requires expertise and passion, which means the Managing Director of Operations will be:

  • A FINANCIAL LEADER by:
    • Providing financial oversight, monitoring, and reporting, as well as sophisticated financial analysis and modeling to support good decision-making by the CEO, President, Executive Team, and Board of Directors
    • Managing and developing a three-person Finance department that will oversee financial policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures, ensuring operation in accordance with all federal, state and local legal, fiscal and other financial reporting requirements
    • In collaboration with the President and the Managing Director of Strategic Relationships, leading Commit’s annual budgeting process
    • Supports monthly financial reporting and annual audit process
  • A PEOPLE LEADER by:
    • Contributing to and enhancing an equitable, inclusive, and strengths-based organizational culture that values continuous improvement and embodies Commit’s core values 
    • Managing, supporting and developing a two-person Human Resources department to create  human resources systems and strategies in support of the overall goals of Commit, specifically in the areas of recruitment and retention, talent management, professional development, compensation and benefits, and succession planning
    • Working closely with each member of the Executive Team and Director of Human Resources to implement recruitment, retention, talent management, and professional development strategies to ensure that every employee of Commit is having a consistent, high quality experience
  • An OPERATIONAL LEADER by:
    • Leading organizational systems analyses and improvements to streamline and optimize organizational structures
    • Managing organizational facilities, including furniture, office equipment, software, supplies, and maintenance
    • Providing administrative support to various Shared Services departments across the organization
    • Managing and developing operations services department to  achieve the objectives above
  • An ORGANIZATIONAL LEADER by serving as a member of Commit’s Executive Team, contributing to cross-organizational decision making, strategy, and continuous improvement

Professional Experience

  • Experience building and scaling financial, operations, and human resources capabilities in growing organizations through the development and continuous improvement of organization-wide systems
  • Seven or more years of management experience is required, including experience managing finance, human resources, and operations capabilities
  • Experience using multiple types of data, including stakeholder input, to set a vision and strategy and effectively manage teams in executing complex, collaborative strategies and projects across multiple constituencies
  • Experience managing and supporting the professional development of a diverse team
  • Demonstrated skills in budget management, internal controls, and financial analysis, including scenario planning

  • Bachelor’s degree is required; MBA or M.S. in Finance or Accounting is preferred; experience in an educational organization and/or the nonprofit sector is a plus

While the Partnership’s current geographic scope is Dallas County, its early success has led to its recent agreement to support similar burgeoning efforts in Ft. Worth/Tarrant County (350,000 K-12 students) and Houston/Harris County (~900,000 K-12 students). Collectively, these three regions educate 1 in 3 children in Texas and roughly 4% of the nation’s K-12 population. When aligned in the future by common data and goals, these regions could prove a powerful force behind aligned advocacy to alter state public funding streams and key policies benefiting students.
