Director of Finance

The Director of Finance (Controller) is responsible for oversight of all finance and accounting activities for the organization: accounts payable & receivable, financial reporting and controls, annual audit, as well as grants/contracts administration. He/She will collaborate with leaders across the organization to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of the Commit Partnership. These collaborations include:

  • Program leaders to support them with managing budgets, program operations and executing fiscal policies and procedures
  • Operations staff to streamline processes across the finance, HR and operations functions
  • Executive team and Board to develop the annual operating budget and provide insight into the financial health of the organization

Reporting to the COO, the Director builds/leads a team that is responsible for the following:


  • Oversee all accounting activities of the organization and ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards (including GAAP for non-profit organizations) and regulatory requirements
  • Ensure internal controls are in place that protect the organization against fraud and provide accurate and complete financial reporting
  • Oversee management of grants and contracts, including compliance with funder requirements
  • Ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant period
  • Prepare financial reports for government, corporate and foundation grantors
  • Ensure vendors are paid correctly in accordance with their terms and related expenses are properly recorded
  • Assure that proper protocol exists for authorization of all transactions in accordance with the organization’s policies regarding dollar limits, budget requirements, internal controls and other criteria as may be applicable
  • Coordinate external audit and ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal government regulations and other applicable laws and requirements governing foundations and charitable organizations
  • Maintain compliance calendar to be sure required filings are on time and accurate, including but not limited to: payroll reporting, Form 990 reporting, Form 1099 reporting
  • Remain up-to-date on nonprofit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit  organizations
  • Work to continuously improve the quality and efficiency of operational accounting services such as accounts receivable, payroll, accounts payable and purchasing

Finance Planning

  • Work with the Managing Directors of Operations and Philanthropy to develop and oversee the annual operating budget and cash flow projections
  • Plan, coordinate and execute annual budget development and lead forecasting process
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decisions affecting the organization such as: evaluation of potential partnerships, program operations and financial investments

Financial Reporting

  • Develop and deliver timely and accurate financial reports and analysis to support decision-making across the organization and build the financial literacy of the team in the process
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner
  • Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Commit’s financial status
  • Administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain and correct variances as appropriate
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets



  • Minimum of a CPA and/or MBA
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in audit or accounting for nonprofit organizations
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles, including GAAP for nonprofit organizations
  • Experience with nonprofit financial management, including strong understanding of managing donor-restricted funds
  • Knowledge of auditing practices and principles, as well as experience in performing or preparing for an annual audit

  • Experience in change management preferred

Proven leadership skills: ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports, business partners and supporters

  • Ability to recruit, develop and retain a diverse team: appropriately clarify roles and responsibilities, ensure that each individual can reach organizational goals, and delegate appropriately
  • Experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting
  • Proven communication skills, with an ability to explain complex financial information to various stakeholders

Collectively, these three regions educate 1 in 3 children in Texas and roughly 4% of the nation’s K-12 population. When aligned in the future by common data and goals, these regions could prove a powerful force behind aligned advocacy to alter state public funding streams and key policies benefiting students.
